The official merchandise of the University of Barcelona contributes to the initiatives the UB undertakes in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The University ensures that its products comply with eco-labels and environmental certifications to minimize their environmental footprint.
To achieve this goal, UB merchandise must meet the following criteria:
- Textile production processes must respect basic labour rights, environmental management, and occupational safety.
- Main textiles used must limit chemical substances, as specified by standards such as Oeko-Tex 100, Made in Green, or equivalents, to reduce environmental and health impacts
- Textiles should use natural fibres from organic or fair-trade farming, following European Commission Fair Trade Communication (1999) or European Regulation CE 834/2007, or the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
- Inclusion of recycled fibres in polyester fabrics is required.
- Recyclable fibres should be prioritized, especially in stationery accessories.
- Whenever feasible, products should be made of a single material to facilitate end-of-life recycling.
- Forestry products (e.g., wood) must hold FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certifications to ensure responsible forest management.
- The use of plant-based materials like wood or bamboo is encouraged.
- Efforts are made to reduce packaging throughout the distribution chain.
